One of UNB’s newest moms has just received one of Atlantic Canada’s most prestigious awards for business students. Just days before delivering a baby boy, Stephanie Mallet of Moncton, NB, learned that she is one of nine students in Atlantic Canada to receive the 2021 Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies worth $30,000.

Candidates of this award are selected by the Frank H. Sobey Awards Board of Trustees comprised of Atlantic Canadian business and academic leaders. The 2021 winners were chosen from 32 exceptional nominations provided by the Deans of their respective business schools based on their entrepreneurship, support for the communities in which they live and work, their employment experience and academic excellence.

“Since 1989, the Frank H. Sobey Awards have been awarded to 198 emerging business leaders from Atlantic Canada,” noted Paul D. Sobey, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies, during a virtual celebration in March. “Every year, our Board is overwhelmed by the talent, leadership and entrepreneurialism shining through students at Atlantic Canadian Business Schools. The talent that these young business minds bring to this region is inspiring to us all.”

“Stephanie has a stellar academic record at UNB,” said Dr. Devashis Mitra, dean of UNB’s faculty of management. “She enjoys sharing her passion for learning, her talents and her entrepreneurial skills with her family, fellow students and colleagues. She represents the very best of our students.”

Michael Medline, President and CEO of Empire Group, also attended the event and reminded the “Laureates of the Frank H. Sobey Award” of how Frank H. Sobey lived through challenges like the depression, wars, and even a pandemic and continued to run his business successfully and innovate. “He was a true entrepreneur who believed in giving back and helping his community.”

Mallet is completing the fourth year of the BBA program at UNB’s faculty of management and, driven by her passion for community and food security, plans to open a business that will provide local food. She said it is important to her to have her children grow up in an entrepreneurial community and learn the value of giving back.

“Frank H. Sobey himself gave back to his community. He is truly inspiring and I hope to be like him some day.”
