Raashid Razick grew up in Colombo, Sri Lanka, one of four children in a close-knit family. From a young age, he was driven by his mother’s dream: to see one of her children become a designated professional. That dream became his mission.
Determined to find the best path to success, Raashid chose the University of New Brunswick’s faculty of management for its strong academic reputation, affordability, and—most importantly—its renowned Co-op program and Student Investment Fund (SIF). “The promise of gaining real-world, hands-on experience before I even graduated was an opportunity I knew I couldn't pass up,” he says.
Raashid made the most of every opportunity. He pushed himself academically, participated in case competitions, and immersed himself in experiential learning. His efforts paid off in May 2025 when he graduated with the 2nd highest CGPA from the 2025 BBA graduating class and began working full-time as an Auditor with the Office of the Auditor General for the Halifax Regional Municipality.
In his role, Raashid conducts performance audits to ensure municipal programs are efficient, effective, and delivering real value to the public. “What I find most meaningful is the opportunity to have a tangible impact on the community,” he says.
“We promote evidence-based decision-making and shape recommendations that can improve municipal operations for everyone. It’s the ultimate satisfaction, a chance to give back to the country that welcomed me and gave me these incredible opportunities.”
Raashid says the BBA program gave him both the technical foundation and the practical experience he needed to succeed. Courses in finance and accounting built his core knowledge, while hands-on experiences like case competitions and the Student Investment Fund pushed him out of his comfort zone and sharpened his analytical and decision-making skills.
“Managing a real portfolio in the SIF taught me practical decision-making under pressure in a way no textbook could,” he explains. Courses like Business Communications and Philosophy helped him develop the clear, logical thinking and communication abilities he now uses daily.
His Co-op placements were equally transformative. At Opportunities New Brunswick, he got his first taste of public service and discovered the fulfillment that comes from serving the community. Later roles in internal audit at Shaw and Rogers Communications deepened his passion for the field and showed him how impactful audit work can be in driving meaningful change.
Raashid encourages current students to seek out challenges. “Step outside your comfort zone. These experiences are more than just resume builders, they’re where you develop the skills and confidence that will set you apart.”
His personal philosophy is simple but powerful: focus on what you can control—your effort, your attitude, your dedication—and leave the rest to a higher power. “You’ll be surprised by what you can achieve. Be relentless, be passionate, and trust that your hard work will open doors you never thought possible.”
