The 8th UNB Data Challenge, organized by UNB’s International Business and Entrepreneurship Centre (IBEC), brought together teams of students to showcase the transformative potential of open data. Participants used open data from governments, non-profits, and NGOs to create data visualizations that told insightful stories. These visualizations communicated research insights and recommendations, highlighting the practical applications of data in driving positive change.

This annual event encouraged students to use their creativity and analytical skills to build compelling infographic posters and presentations, with a chance to win up to $4,500 in prize money. This year, 112 teams applied, and 18 were selected to compete in the qualifiers round on Nov. 29. These teams represented 14 universities from across the nation, including Mount Allison University, Douglas University, Ontario Tech University and the University of Toronto. A recurring theme at this year’s Data Challenge was the Canadian healthcare system and the struggles of healthcare professionals.

For the Finalist Round, the judges chose six of the best teams to present their research and compete. Team ER Solution Seekers from Mount Allison University won first place in the Presentation Category, earning $1,250 for their research on healthcare access in New Brunswick. In the Infographic Category, Team ScatterBrains from Ontario Tech University took first place, winning $750 for their findings on the shortage of nurses in Ontario and New Brunswick.

The 2024 UNB Data Challenge was generously supported by sponsors, including the Government of New Brunswick, TechImpact, Pond Deshpande Centre, Service New Brunswick, Data Wazo, the Atlantic Association for Research in Mathematical Sciences (AARMS) and UNB’s Faculty of Management.

A highlight of the event was the virtual panel moderated by Cathy Simpson, the CEO of TechImpact, featuring professionals from Deloitte, Mariner Innovations, MNP and J.D. Irving. The panel focused on the future of work in business analytics, including the integration of AI. This discussion provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of data analytics, offering students and professionals a glimpse into potential career paths and the skills needed to succeed in this dynamic field.

The UNB Data Challenge continues to be a significant platform for budding data enthusiasts to hone their skills and make meaningful contributions to the field of data science. By bringing together diverse perspectives and fostering a culture of open data, the competition plays a crucial role in shaping the future of data-driven innovation in Canada.
