The University of New Brunswick's faculty of management proudly welcomed the Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA) in its inaugural stop for the CVCA University Tour this year. This exciting event, held on Sept. 25, 2023, in collaboration with the UNB International Business & Entrepreneurship Centre (IBEC), proved to be an insightful experience for the 50 participating students.

Students came from diverse backgrounds and a variety of different academic programs at UNB. The inclusive nature of the event set the stage for a dynamic and enriching exchange of ideas among the participants.

A highlight of the event was a lively panel discussion featuring Laïla Thériault (Investment Analyst, New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, NBIF), Robb Baird (Lawyer, McInnes Cooper), and Paul Thornton (Senior Commercialization Officer, NBIF). These industry experts shared their personal career journeys within the venture capital and private equity sectors, providing insights and inspiration for aspiring students.

To deepen the learning experience, Michael Badham (Strategic Financial Advisor, Corporate Finance) led an interactive simulation activity using real-world case studies. This hands-on approach aimed to emphasize the significance of making informed decisions in securing initial investments—a crucial lesson for students venturing into the world of finance.

Sara Bentham (Director of Programs with CVCA) and Megan Price (Program Coordinator with CVCA) hosted the event. They shared insights into the Canadian venture capital landscape shed light on the diverse career and internship opportunities available within CVCA.

“This three-hour session provided an excellent platform for students to network with professionals, fostering connections that could prove helpful in their future endeavors,” says Ryan Reid, Program Officer with IBEC. “By exposing students to real-world insights, interactive activities, and influential professionals, this event has opened doors to opportunities students haven’t thought of previously.”

Housed within the faculty of management at the University of New Brunswick, IBEC fosters partnerships between UNB and the business community through experiential learning, research and training.
