As September draws near on the UNB Saint John campus, the athletics department is preparing for the Covid return to collegiate sport. Are you interested in joining a team, but don’t know where to start? Our Varsity Athletics coordinator has provided answers to the most frequently asked questions from prospective students:
What sports are offered?
The Seawolves are proud members of the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA). Student-athletes are able to compete in six varsity sports: men's and women's soccer, volleyball and basketball. Our cross country and track and field teams compete in U Sports.
What level of experience is the coach looking for?
We are looking for individuals with a high skill set and a strong team mindset. Past experience in a high caliber program is preferred such as:
- Being a starter on your high school team;
- Playing on another college or university team;
- Playing on a high performance club team;
- Playing on a provincial/national team; and/or
- Playing on a team in the upper division of a city or regional program.
How much time is playing a varsity sport going to take?
There is a significant commitment required to participate in collegiate sport. Our season is follows:

Teams practice three-four times per week for 1.5 hours. Games take place on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Mid-week games are typically played versus teams that are in close proximity.
Time management is essential to student-athlete success. Student Services can be a great tool during the school year. Visit unb.ca/studentlife/support to discover the support services offered.
How much do I have to pay to play on a team?
Each team has a fee that ranges from $250-$400. This fee covers expenses surrounding non-conference play, specialty training, team apparel and special activities. This fee can be paid out-of-pocket, or donors can be secured through our Adopt-a-Seawolf program.
The athletics department covers the cost of transportation and hotels for league play. In addition, players receive a meal subsidy while traveling out of province to offset food expenses.
When and where are tryouts?
New and returning full-time students are welcome to attend the following open training sessions:
