Graduate Seminar Latin Squares Larisa Tamjidi (UNB) Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 3:30 pm Tilley Hall Room 5 Latin Squares techniques have been used in many statistical applications. In this talk I introduce the mathematical properties of Latin squares, concept of orthogonally of Latin squares and complete set of mutually orthogonal Latin squares. A Latin square of order n is an n by n matrix...

Graduate Seminar Quaternion Algebras Amir Nasr Azadani (UNB) Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 11:30 am Tilley Hall Room 124 My talk is on Quaternion algebras. We give the definition of quaternion and split quaternion algebras, splitting fields and norms of elements. After that conics associated with quaternion algebras will be discussed. Then two classical theorems from the 1930s will be mentioned: a...

Colloquium Cataland Nathan Williams (Université du Québec à Montréal) Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 3:30 pm Tilley Hall Room 5 I will talk about two combinatorial miracles relating poset-theoretic objects with Coxeter-theoretic objects. The first miracle is that there are the same number of linear extensions of the root poset as reduced words of the longest element...
