Viqar Husain, a professor in the department of mathematics and statistics at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton (UNB), has been researching the structure of spacetime for a number of years. Jonathan Ziprick recently joined the department in August 2014 as a postdoctoral researcher after completing his PhD at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. He is partially funded by an Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS) fellowship, and his research on quantum gravity has been highlighted in the 2014 AARMS August newletter.

Department of Mathematics & Statistics undergraduate students Tony Wu and Brandon Doherty came first and fourth, respectively, in the math student talk competition at the Science Atlantic conference in Saint John (Oct 3-5, 2014). Tony and Brandon also placed fourth as a team in the math contest on Friday. The July 5 writing of the Math Placement Test (which was canceled due to Hurricane Arthur) has been reschdeuled to Saturday, July 19 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in MacLaggan Hall room 105. Sanjeev Seahra participated in the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) 2014 national undergraduate lecture tour. He visited the University of Waterloo, Brock University, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa in February and March. His talk "What's the matter with gravity?" gave a status update on state of gravitational theory, including some perspective on the recent claim of the discovery of gravitational waves from the early universe.
