Last summer I had the pleasure of working with the Government of New Brunswick (GNB) in the Air and Water Sciences Branch as a Water Science Student. During my internship, I conducted sampling trips, monitored several of NB’s waterways for pesticides, bacteria, and algae, and assisted in the data analysis process.

While in the field I would collect samples from rivers, lakes, and beaches. These samples included metals, bacteria, algae, and/or nutrients depending on the area and schedule. At each site I would also used probes to record water properties such as temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen.

While I was in the office, I compiled the provincial data for its watershed organizations into easy-to-read Excel sheets, along with reports and presentations showcasing each organizations data and the issues they may face with their water quality.

My time with GNB was an excellent opportunity to sharpen my field work skills, while also allowing me to work with new technology and in new circumstances, furthering my knowledge and experience. Compiling reports and presenting in a professional setting was a new experience for me. Being able to take knowledge from my Master of Environmental Management (MEM) classes, such as compiling maps in ArcGIS, and apply it to my internship was a fun experience that showed me exactly how I can utilize the skills learned in the program to my future careers.

I greatly appreciated my time with GNB. It was full of growth and learning all thanks to my great team. All my colleagues were eager to help and made the experience both educational and enjoyable. I can’t wait to see where this experience and education with UNB takes me!
