Valued at $62,000 over four years, the Beaverbrook Scholars Award is awarded annually to three outstanding graduates of New Brunswick high schools who display high academic ability, financial need, and contribution to their communities. This year’s recipients are Kyler Hogan, Kyra LeBreton, and Lauren Shehab.
Kyler Hogan is a graduate of Harbour View High School in Saint John, where he was co-president of the climate action group and columnist for the school newspaper. Hogan’s contributions to the arts at his school are wide-ranging, including performing in school musical productions, playing clarinet in the school band, and participating in two choral ensembles. He will begin the bachelor of science in environmental management degree program at UNB’s Fredericton campus in September.
Kyra LeBreton is a graduate of Kennebecasis Valley High School, where she has taken part in activities including school musical productions and the school choir. On her own time, she tutors fellow students and volunteers in several capacities. She has developed her leadership skills through participation in the Canadian Armed Forces co-operative education program. LeBreton will begin the bachelor of science degree program at UNB’s Saint John campus in September.
Lauren Shehab is a graduate of Rothesay High School, where she served on the student council as wellness assistant and secretary/treasurer and has participated in various school activities including Model UN, theatre productions, and the yearbook committee. Among other volunteer work, she volunteers for the Girl Guides of Canada as an Embers leader, mentoring younger participants in the guiding program. Shehab will begin the bachelor of arts and science degree program at UNB’s Fredericton campus in September.
“I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Lauren, Kyra, and Kyler as they begin their journey as Beaverbrook Scholars,” said Beaverbrook Scholars Award chair, Dr. Laura Richard. “These extraordinary young people embody the promise, leadership, and community spirit that have been at the heart of this awards program for more than four decades.”
The Beaverbrook Scholarships at the University of New Brunswick have been awarded since 1920, when the scholarship program was initiated by Sir William Maxwell Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook, PC, ONB. In 1979, former scholars came together to establish the modern Beaverbrook Scholars Awards in honour of their former benefactor, so they might continue his tradition of helping to shape future leaders.
The Beaverbrook Scholars Award is maintained by former Beaverbrook Scholars with support from the Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation. Since 1981, more than $3 million has been awarded to more than 100 exceptional graduates of New Brunswick high schools who display high academic ability and financial need, and make extraordinary contributions to their communities. Together, the Beaverbrook Scholars are a strong network of leaders, making change at the local, provincial and national levels.
