Syed Muhammad Ahsan Gillani

Last summer, I worked as a GIS Analyst at the NB Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (NB DTI), where I focused on reclassification of DTI roads (dataset) using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Web Map.

Key takeaways from my experience:

  • Using ArcGIS Web Apps to create interactive web maps that allow dynamic visualization and editing of both historic and current New Brunswick road data.
  • Applying ArcGIS Pro tools such as Georeferencing, Model Builder, and Reclassification techniques, while gaining practical problem-solving skills through guidance from experts

I highly appreciated the continuous support from my immediate supervisor Grace McGinn along with other GIS experts including Jim Dickie at NB DTI.

This internship enhanced my technical GIS and technical report writing skills that I learned from Prof. Jae Ogilvie and Prof. Janet Blackadar, respectively, at UNB’s Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management.

The experience reinforced the importance of GIS skills, planning, effective communication and teamwork required to solve real time problems for the provincial government. I am looking forward to applying these skills in future opportunities!
