Last summer I was worked with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) as a Forest Research Technician, diving into the science behind healthy, resilient forests. My internship blended boots-on-the-ground fieldwork with data management, giving me a full view of how research supports sustainable forestry in Canada.

Over my four months with NRCan, I hiked to more than 60 sample plots: measuring trees, setting up microplots following the National Forest Inventory (NFI) protocol, and recording data that will inform forest health assessments for years to come. Back at the office, I learned to clean and analyze data in RStudio, helping turn field notes into actionable insights.

The experience taught me to solve problems in any setting - whether adjusting a plot around a hidden ant hill, troubleshooting gear in the rain, or debugging code after a long day outside. I’m proud of the skills I’ve gained in ecological monitoring, teamwork, and data analysis.
Huge thanks to my mentors and colleagues at NRCan for sharing your knowledge and making this season so rewarding.
I’m excited to carry these skills forward and keep contributing to Canada’s sustainable forest management.
