Our newest Sustainability Research Champion is Madison Hubbard

The title of your research project

Evaluating the Impacts of Transportation Corridors on Wildlife and Strategies for Impact Reduction in New Brunswick

Overview of your research project

My research project examines the impacts of transportation corridors on wildlife in New Brunswick, with a focus on wildlife-vehicle collision mortality and existing mitigation strategies. I am interested in understanding how transportation infrastructure affects wildlife and exploring opportunities to better protect wildlife and their habitats. Working with Dr. Trevor Hanson and the UNB Community Transportation Research Lab (CTRL) has helped me develop my understanding of the impacts of transportation infrastructure on wildlife.

How does your work intersect with sustainability?

My interest in this topic comes from my passion for sustainability and environmental protection, and my interest in connecting Civil Engineering research with sustainable goals. I am particularly interested in how mitigation measures, such as wildlife fencing, underpasses, and overpasses, can help protect wildlife and their habitats. I believe it is important to consider environmental impacts when designing transportation infrastructure and to explore ways to make transportation more sustainable.

What impact do you hope this research will have?

I hope this research will encourage more sustainability-focused transportation research, particularly in understanding the ecological impacts of transportation infrastructure on wildlife. I also hope it can help open the door for a more in-depth study of this topic in the future, allowing someone with more time and resources to explore these impacts and potential mitigation strategies further.

Where can people find information about your work?

This project is still ongoing; it is being supervised by Dr. Trevor Hanson as part of a Civil Engineering Special Studies course! If you have any questions regarding my project, feel free to reach out to my email: madison.hubbard@unb.ca.
