University communities are essential in the effort to build a more sustainable future. As UNB works towards its climate action and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is happy to highlight UNB community members who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”.

Our Green Champion this month is Bre Atkinson

Growing up in a small, urban area I always found myself drawn to the woods. Finding a way to explore and enjoy nature quickly became a favourite pastime of mine. Over the years, I found myself desiring a job where I predominantly worked outside.

I was introduced to the vegetation management and utility maintenance sector in Alberta, where the “how” of the work became a priority for me. Often times, we struggle with the way our environments are managed as the world hastens to develop technology and find the land to do so. Where I find peace in this growing world, is studying and working in the natural resources sector to strive to focus on the “how” we do the work. It matters just as much, if not more, than the “what” we are doing.

By drawing attention to the complexity of ecosystems surrounding the human-nature interface, we can address many of the world’s sustainability and climate issues within a more holistic framework.
