As we transition into warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to embrace habits that are good for both you and the planet. Small simple actions add up over time, and the transition of seasons offers plenty of opportunities to live more sustainably without sacrificing comfort or convenience.

Here are 20 easy ways you can practice sustainable living during the warm weather season.

Energy saving habits at home

1. Use natural light on cooler days by switching off indoor lights and opening your curtains.
2. Turn off the AC when temperatures are cooler and let fresh air flow through open windows.
3. Keep your home cool naturally by closing curtains or blinds during the hottest parts of the day.
4. Unplug electronics when they’re not in use to reduce energy consumption.

Cleaner air and outdoor activities

5. Choose electric grills and / or electric landscaping tools to help reduce air pollution.
6. Grow your own herbs or vegetables, whether on a windowsill, patio, or in your backyard.
7. Support local farmers by shopping at farmers markets for fresh, seasonal produce.
8. Hang dry your laundry in the sun instead of using the dryer to save energy.

Reduce single use waste

9. Carry a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.
10. Bring your own containers when dining out to avoid disposable takeout packaging.
11. Try products from a refillery, such as shampoo or laundry detergent, to reduce packaging waste.

Sustainable transportation and outdoor awareness

12. Bike or walk to your destination when possible. It’s great for the planet and your physical and mental health.
13. Stay weather aware by checking local forecasts and heat advisories. This also helps you stay informed about fire bans and safety alerts.

Eco friendly personal care

14. Choose non toxic sunscreens that avoid harmful chemicals. They’re better for your skin and help protect waterways.

Reconnect with nature

15. Spend intentional time outdoors, whether reading in the shade, going for a walk, or simply enjoying fresh air. Nature time can have powerful mental health benefits.

Mindful consumption

16. Get a library card for your summer reads. You can borrow, return, repeat. It’s a simple way to reduce overconsumption and support a sharing economy.
17. Curate a sustainable summer wardrobe by thrifting or shopping from local makers.
18. Donate items you no longer need to reduce clutter in your home and give them a second life.

Community and sustainable food choices

19. Learn about local recycling programs and integrate them into your routine.
20. Try one meatless day a month, reducing meat consumption helps lower emissions.

Every small choice, whether it’s turning off a light, carrying a reusable bottle, or choosing to walk instead of drive, adds up to real and measurable change over time.

Sustainable living isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress, intention, and noticing the little moments where we can do better for ourselves and the planet.

As we head into the summer break, we challenge you to intentionally incorporate at least one new sustainable habit into your routine. Pick something simple, something that feels doable, and give it a try.
