University communities are essential in the effort to build a more sustainable future. As UNB works towards its climate action and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is happy to highlight UNB community members who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”.
Our Green Champion this month is Sarah Colford
My name is Sarah Colford and I grew up in Lorneville, a place that shaped who I am and how I understand sustainability. Some of my earliest memories are of exploring the vast trail system by foot, standing on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, and feeling a deep sense of peace and belonging in the natural beauty around me. That connection never left me. As a singer-songwriter, I often express my longing for home through my music, writing songs inspired by Lorneville and the comfort it brings me.
Today, Lorneville faces the threat of large-scale industrial expansion in the form of a proposed AI data centre that would devastate hundreds of acres of land along our coastline. This development threatens fragile saltwater marshes and 400-year-old trees, ecosystems that cannot be replaced once lost.
The project moves forward despite strong community opposition and risks permanently altering the character and environmental integrity of Lorneville. Witnessing this has strengthened my commitment to sustainability and advocacy.
I spread awareness and speak up whenever possible to ensure the truth is known about what is happening to our coastline. I deeply admire the tireless work of the Save Lorneville Task Force, who dedicate endless hours to protecting our community. Lorneville is not just where I’m from, it is my home and my heart.
