University communities are essential in the effort to build a more sustainable future. As UNB works towards its climate action and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is happy to highlight UNB community members who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”.

Our Green Champion this month is Cadence Steeves.

My name is Cadence Steeves, and I am the Sustainability Coordinator for the UNB Menstrual Health Society. I have always had a passion for environmental sustainability and have channelled this both at an individual level, such as buying local and reducing my consumption, and at a community level, such as participating in local climate change movements. My personal experience with transitioning to sustainable menstrual products was one of my main motivators in joining the Menstrual Health Society.

Through my role in the Society, I have had the opportunity to raise awareness about sustainable menstrual products within the UNB community. Through our Sustainability Month social media campaign, we were able to provide information on the environmental impact of disposable menstrual products, as well as detail the advantages and disadvantages of different reusable products.

Through our Sustainability Workshop Booth at the UNB Sustainability Free Store, we were able to provide further education on the use and care of these reusable products, and we were able to gift each attendee a free reusable product of their choice! Looking forward, we hope to provide further education to school-aged menstruators and provide them with access to age-appropriate reusable options.

I am incredibly honoured to be named ‘A Green Champion.’ Thank you so much to UNB Sustainability for recognising my efforts in helping make UNB a ‘greener’ and more sustainable place!
