University communities are essential in the effort to build a more sustainable future. As UNB works towards its climate action and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is happy to highlight UNB community members who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”.
Our Green Champion this month is Monica Boutot
My name is Monica Boutot, and I am a 5th-year BBA student and the current VP Student Engagement. Throughout my university experience, I've been dedicated to promoting sustainability, both personally and within my community.
In my own household, I actively work to reduce waste by using Swedish dishcloths, plant-based cleaning products, bar soap, and LED lights, among other eco-friendly alternatives. Growing up, my parents instilled a strong commitment to sustainability.
Every spring, from April to mid-July, my family and I harvest a significant amount of local produce in Edmundston. Last spring, for example, we harvested 1200 lbs of fiddleheads and 200 lbs of wild strawberries for our community. I've learned various safe and sustainable harvesting methods to ensure these resources regenerate annually.
As VP Student Engagement, I recognized an opportunity to empower students on their own sustainability journeys. Within my first month in this role, I connected with the UNB Sustainability team and began planning for Sustainability Week. I am committed to providing sustainable options to students during my term and will continue to seek out and implement initiatives that support this goal.
