University communities are essential in the effort to build a more sustainable future. As UNB works towards its climate action and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is happy to highlight UNB community members who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”.
Our Green Champion of September 2025 is Laura Pitre:
Hi! My name is Laura Pitre, I am entering my 5th year pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. Sustainability is a big part of my life and something that I am very passionate about. I make a conscious effort to reduce my carbon footprint by doing things like recycling, switching to reusable options, and supporting local.
Over the past three years I have been a part of the Menstrual Health Society where I have spent countless hours educating individuals on how to have a more sustainable period and providing them with free products to encourage the green side of menstruation.
This summer I have had the pleasure being a part of the UNB Sustainability team where I have helped maintain the community gardens, put together the Free Food Planters, and participated in several other initiatives surrounding the climate change action plan.
Beyond my work on campus, I have planted over 42,000 trees in my lifetime and plan to continue planting more. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to protecting our planet, and I am excited to keep expanding my knowledge and taking action toward building a more sustainable future.
