Recycling drop-off locations in Fredericton and Saint John

Many individuals in Fredericton and Saint John are fortunate to be able to be apart of the curbside collection program. Fredericton has their ‘Blue’ and ‘Grey’ recycling bin program where Saint John has their ‘Blue’ and ‘Green’ recycling bin program.
Currently, these recycling programs have limitations regarding the products it collects and does not cover all areas around these cities (student residences and some apartment buildings are not included in the program).
As a result, some individuals may be unsure of how to manage their recyclables.
Paper recycling
Things like newsprint, cardboard, boxboard, envelopes (with or without windows), computer paper, scribblers, coloured and white bond paper, phonebooks, paperback books, and cardboard egg cartons are all accepted in the ‘Grey’ bins (Fredericton curbside pickup), ‘Blue’ bins (Saint John curbside pickup) or can be recycled at the following depots:
Fredericton
- Capital Winter Club: 232 Rookwood Avenue, Fredericton, NB. Depot is in the parking lot at the side of building.
- Willie O’Ree Place: 605 Cliffe Street, Fredericton, NB. Depot is in the north corner of the main parking lot.
Saint John
- Crane Mountain Landfill: 10 Crane Mountain Rd, Saint John, NB.
Circular materials outlines a detailed list of accepted materials and guidelines for preparation on the materials that do not go in the curbside pickup bins or to the recycling depot.
Pet food bags and shinny wrapping cannot be recycled with the normal paper recycling materials; however, it can be recycled at the following places.
Fredericton

- Best Metals: 320 Wilsey Rd, Fredericton, NB.
Saint John
- Crane Mountain Landfill: 10 Crane Mountain Rd, Saint John, NB.
Plastic recycling
All plastic containers, bottles and cans along with milk cartons, and food cans made of tin, steel, and aluminum can be put in the ‘Blue’ bins (Fredericton curbside pickup) or the ‘Green’ bins (Saint John curbside pickup) or can be recycled at the following depots:
Fredericton

Bottle and can recycling
You can recycle your bottles and cans and get a refund of 10 cents for all cans, pop bottles, juice bottles, mini sips, liquor bottles (500ml & under), and a refund of 20 cents for all liquor bottles (501ml and up).
However, to ensure this refund, the bottles and cans, they must say "Return for Refund" on the product. Recycle NB has a list of locations for all the redemption centers around the province so that you can find the location that is the most convenient for you.
Glass recycling
The following places will accept non-refundable glass bottles and other food-grade glass products (excluding dishware, ceramics, Pyrex, or windows) that have been cleaned and dried:
Fredericton

Styrofoam recycling
White Styrofoam (Polystyrene) can be recycled at the following places.

Metal recycling
Tin, steel and aluminum food cans can all go in the ‘Blue’ bins (Fredericton curbside pickup) and ‘Green’ bins (Saint John curbside pickup).
However, if you do not have access to those bins or have other metals to recycle, you can take them to the following locations:

Electronic recycling
Recycle My Electronic has a list of locations where you can take your electronic recycling, each location has their own specific requirements for what you can bring in to them.
The following on campus locations will take your small electronics:

Saint John

Ink and toner recycling
The following places will take your ink and toner recycling:

Saint John
Battery recycling
Recycle your Batteries Canada provides a list of locations to take single use and rechargeable batteries along with specific guidelines for proper battery disposal.
As for car batteries, individuals can take them back to any car battery retailer. For example, Walmart and Canadian Tire both except car batteries, will dispose of them properly, and they will give you a voucher that can go towards a new battery.
The following on campus locations will take your single use and rechargeable batteries:

Saint John
UNB Saint John has Call2Recycle boxes located in various departments around campus, however, the most accessible location for the general population is:
- Hazen Hall: 97 Tucker Park Rd, Saint John, NB.
Third floor, outside the Information Services and Systems Office.
Writing tools recycling
Take all your used pens, pencils, markers and highlighters to the following places and these locations will recycle your writing tools with the help of TerraCycle, a waste management company that specializes in recycling items not typically accepted by local curbside recycling programs.
Fredericton
- Staples: 1140 Prospect Street, Fredericton, NB.
- Consciously Clean: 414 York St, Fredericton, NB.
Saint John
Staples: 176 Rothesay Ave, Saint John, NB.
Paint recycling
Recycle NB provides guidelines to help ensure your paint products meet the required criteria along with a list of retail locations in your area that you can drop off your paint.
Oil recycling
This includes motor vehicle oils, oil filters, antifreeze, aerosol containers, and plastic containers that contained oil, antigel/glycol and DEF.
OUMA Atlantic offers detailed information and instructions on how to properly dispose of these products and where to find the location closest to you.
Tire recycling
You can return up to five used tires at once for recycling to any tire retailer in the province during regular business hours.
This includes but is not limited to:
- Motorcycle tires
- Passenger tires
- Medium truck tires
Recycle NB provides additional information on how to properly recycle tires.
Pharmaceutical products and medical sharps disposal
In New Brunswick, individuals should be able to take any old prescription medication, over the counter medication, sharps containers, and natural health products to any pharmacy for proper disposal.
Eyeglass and lens recycling
Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre (CLERC) take old eyeglasses and lenses, recycle them and donate them to individuals in developing countries with the same prescription. Most optical centers around town will have bins for you to donate your glasses.
Household hazardous waste disposal
If the packaging of the product has the following symbols or warnings, it is considered hazardous:
- Corrosive
- Toxic
- Flammable
- Reactive
- Danger
- Poison
- Caution
- Warning
All materials must be in their original packaging and all containers must be less than 20L.
Fredericton
Every Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can safely dispose of your household hazardous waste, free of charge, at the Capital Region Service Commission Household Hazardous Waste Depot.
Saint John
During regular hours, all year round, you can safely dispose of your household hazardous waste, free of charge, at the Fundy Region HHW Depot at the Crane Mountain Landfill.
Other recycling programs
The Consciously Clean Refillery, located in Fredericton has partnered up with a TerraCycle to help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill.

You can drop off any of these materials to consciously clean and they will do the rest for you! There are many other options as well, if Consciously Clean is not convenient to go to.
TerraCycle has a free recycling program, where you can collect one of their listed items, box them up and ship it to them. TerraCycle will then sort, clean and shred your recyclables, selling them to manufacturers to produce an end product that will complete the recycling journey. For example, they make playground surface covers and outdoor furniture. TerraCycle has a map where you can search for nearby drop-off locations that are located all around the world.
Composting
Fredericton
The City of Fredericton currently does not have a compost program. However, if you’re looking to start your own compost at home, the City of Fredericton offers helpful information on how to get started and maintain it.
As for those who are unable to compost in your backyard, it is encouraged to ask to bring your home compost to a community garden or local farm who will put your organic waste to use.
Hayes farm has a community composter that anyone can drop their compost off at, whether they are a member of that community garden or not.

Saint John
The City of Saint John offers a curbside compost program that collects your compost cart on your scheduled collection day. You can place all food waste (including but not limited to; bones, meat, fish and fruit), food-soiled paper, and yard waste in these carts and roll them to the curb each collection.
