University communities are essential in the effort to build a more sustainable future. As UNB works towards its climate action and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is happy to highlight UNB community members who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”.

Our May Green Champion of 2025 is Brianna Orr:

Hi! I’m Brianna Orr, a final-year Software Engineering student with a passion for sustainable development. Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of working with the Sustainability team, first as a summer student and then later through the work-study program during the academic year.

Through these roles, I contributed to several initiatives that support sustainability on campus. I began by helping to develop additional learning modules aimed at enhancing sustainability awareness within the UNB community.

I also took part in setting up the Free Food Planters on both our campuses, which provide produce throughout the warmer months. Additionally, I was involved in the Free Store during Sustainability Month, an initiative that promotes conscious consumption by giving gently used items a second life.

Beyond my work with the team, I strive to embody mindful consumption. Every purchase is a thoughtful decision; I seek out high-quality, eco-friendly products that align with my minimalistic mindset. This approach allows me to actively support a circular economy, where reusing, repairing, and recycling take priority.

My mindful habits also extend to my energy usage. I maximize natural lighting to reduce my reliance on electricity and often opt for energy-efficient tools and appliances whenever possible.

These daily choices may seem small, but collectively, they reflect my commitment to building a more sustainable future, one step at a time. I encourage you all to join me in making conscious choices to work towards a more sustainable future.
