University communities are essential in the effort to build a more sustainable future. As UNB works towards its climate action and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is happy to highlight UNB community members who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”.

Our newest Green Champion is Lara Hickey:

My name is Lara Hickey, and I am in my second year of Civil Engineering at UNB, and I am from Halifax, Nova Scotia! Sustainability has been a strong topic and concern for many years and specifically an urgent topic for people within my generation. I have always had a genuine interest in learning about sustainability.

I am currently the Vice President of Academics for the Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) at UNB, and one of my responsibilities is looking over the society’s sustainability team who organize and host events and workshops related to sustainability. Working alongside my three amazing directors – Seher, Anshul and Madison – we came with the approach that small changes within undergraduate students can make a big difference.

So far this academic year, we have had a series of events which included a Virtual Landfill Tour of the Fredericton Regional Waste Facility. This tour emphasized the importance of waste sorting, recycling, and being mindful of your waste.

We recently had a Pot, Plant, and Paint night which supported local businesses, and we created a series of posters talking about sustainability and ways that students can think more about sustainability and be more sustainable within their limits.

I am also looking forward to doing a project that calculates and analyzes our society's carbon footprint, which will be a good first step to looking at how we can reduce our carbon footprint.
