University communities are essential in the effort to build sustainable futures. As UNB works towards its climate change action plans and sustainability goals, UNB Sustainability is excited to highlight students, faculty and staff who are making a difference on campus as “Green Champions”. Know someone who should be a Green Champion? Let us know at sustain@unb.ca.

Our newest Green Champion is Emma Harper, 2023-2024 President of the UNBSJ Green Society.

Hi, my name is Emma Harper, and I am a fourth year Biology-Psychology student at UNBSJ. I have always had a passion for the environment and sustainability and with the effects of climate change becoming increasingly dire, I knew that I wanted to make a difference.

I joined the UNBSJ Green Society in my first year to connect with like-minded individuals and to have an impact on our campus. In my third and fourth year, I had the privilege to serve as the president.

My team and I accomplished several sustainable initiatives including campus cleanups, Sustainable Sunday posts, as well as several events and giveaways. This year we have been very focused on aligning our society with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

I am also very proud of the creation of our Green Money Fund and the Green Society Bursary for Stewardship in Sustainable Efforts.

In my personal life I have worked diligently to reduce single-use plastics, to support local and to adopt a more flexitarian diet. I have been honoured to work with the Green Society throughout my undergraduate degree and I have learned so much about what it means to be sustainable. I look forward to carrying this information with me into my future endeavours.
