The Atlantic Engineering Competition (AEC) is Atlantic Canada’s largest engineering competition in which teams from all ACES members schools are eligible to compete. Teams compete against each other in one of eight categories that challenge participants to propose solutions to engineering problems. At the UNB qualifier, teams competed for spots at the AEC hosted in Moncton by the Université de Moncton on January 14-16. Those who place first and second in their respective categories are given the opportunity to advance to compete against students from across the country at the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) this year hosted at UNB Fredericton March 11th - 13th!
We made this event 'green' in two ways. First and foremost, we made sure to adhere to UNB Sustainability's Green Event standards. Secondly, we had all the competition prompts be related to sustainability issues such as renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable food production.
To be certified as a Green Event, we agreed to follow several guidelines. Most of these guidelines were not difficult at all! All communication and promotion related to the event was digital to eliminate print materials and printing of rubrics to give to judges was done on the backside of recycled paper. For food, we served pizza to most easily accommodate dietary needs that came in cardboard (compostable) and asked patrons to bring reusable drinkware. We re-used empty boxes from the EUS office as compost containers and took them to be properly composted.
