Valedictorians and distinguished professors to be honoured at UNB graduation ceremonies

Graduation is a time when communities come together to celebrate the accomplishments of both students and faculty. At the University of New Brunswick’s graduation ceremonies in Fredericton and Saint John, five valedictorians will address UNB’s graduating classes of 2022. The university will also honour two outstanding professors, six professors emeriti and UNB’s Award for Excellence in Research recipient.

Valedictorians

  • Katie Herrington, from Saint John, will address the graduates in the faculties of arts, science, applied science and engineering, and business on Friday, May 27, at 3 p.m.
  • Sarah Kelly, from Hanwell, will address the graduates of forestry and environmental management, nursing and science on Wednesday, May 25, at 10 a.m.
  • Brennan Marks, from Fredericton, will address the graduates of arts, law, Renaissance College and interdisciplinary studies on Thursday, May 26, at 10 a.m.
  • Book Sadprasid, from Thailand, will address the graduates of computer science and engineering on Thursday, May 26, at 2:30 p.m.
  • Danielle Thebeau, from Fredericton, will address the graduates of management, education and kinesiology on Wednesday, May 25, at 2:30 p.m.

Professors Emeriti

The designations of professor emerita and professor emeritus will be bestowed upon the following professors for their accomplishments and commitment to teaching, research and administration:

  • Dr. Edmund Biden will receive the designation of Professor Emeritus in Mechanical Engineering on Thursday, May 26, in Fredericton.
  • Dr. Daniel Coleman will receive the designation of Professor Emeritus in Management on Wednesday, May 25, in Fredericton.
  • Jocelyne Thompson, will receive the designation of Librarian Emerita on Thursday, May 26, in Fredericton.
  • Dr. Gary Waite will receive the designation of Professor Emeritus in History on Thursday, May 26, in Fredericton.
  • Dr. Robert Whitney will receive the designation, in absentia, of Professor Emeritus in History and Politics on Friday, May 27, in Saint John.
  • Dr. Pam Whitty will receive the designation of Professor Emerita on Wednesday, May 25, in Fredericton.

Award for Excellence in Research

The UNB Award for Excellence in Research honours faculty who are representative of outstanding research, scholarly, or creative achievements at the University of New Brunswick. It promotes and celebrates an environment that supports intellectual inquiry and discovery.

  • Dr. Yonghao Ni, professor in UNB’s departments of chemical engineering and chemistry, will be presented with UNB’s Award for Excellence in Research in Fredericton on Thursday, May 26.

Excellence in Teaching Awards

Two UNB faculty members will be recognized with Dr. Allan P. Stuart Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching Awards.

  • Dr. Hope Alderson, senior instructor in UNB Saint John’s department of mathematics and statistics, will receive the Dr. Allan P. Stuart Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching in Saint John on Friday, May 27.
  • Dr. Caroline Purdy, senior teaching associate in UNB Fredericton’s department of mathematics and statistics, and director of teaching learning services at UNB’s Centre for Enhanced Teaching and Learning, will receive the Dr. Allan P. Stuart Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching in Fredericton on Wednesday, May 25.
