UNB Saint John’s Lorenzo Virtual Book Club will feature bestselling author Wayne Johnston reading from his novel, The Mystery of Right and Wrong, on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
In the novel, Wade Jackson, a young man from a Newfoundland outport, wants to be a writer. In the university library in St. John’s, where he goes every day to absorb the great books of the world, he encounters the fascinating, South African-born Rachel van Hout, and soon they are lovers.
Wayne Johnston was born and raised in Goulds, N.L. His #1 nationally bestselling novels include The Divine Ryans, A World Elsewhere, The Custodian of Paradise, The Navigator of New York and The Colony of Unrequited Dreams. The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, published in 1998, was nominated for 16 national and international awards including the Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction, and was a Canada Reads finalist defended by Justin Trudeau. A theatrical adaptation of the novel recently toured Canada. Johnston’s most recent novel, First Snow, Last Light, was a national bestseller and longlisted for the IMPAC Dublin prize.
The Lorenzo Virtual Book Club will be a moderated discussion, and all are welcome to attend. The conversation will take place on Microsoft Teams and will later be featured in the Lorenzo by Night podcast. Important to note is that the registrants can be individuals, book clubs, or groups of friends who have bubbled. Participants can be from Saint John, other communities in New Brunswick, other parts of Canada and beyond. In order to receive the link to the discussion, participants must register for free in advance by emailing lorenzo@unb.ca.
The Lorenzo Reading Series acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, The League of Canadian Poets, the New Brunswick Literary Promotion Program, UNB Saint John and its private reading sponsors.
SPOILER ALERT: A spoiler alert notice will be issued at the end of the first part of the discussion to inform participants that, during the section portion of the evening, they will hear plot twists and, potentially, the ending. The assumption is that every participant has read the book prior to the event.
