Pretium Resources Inc. (Pretivm), in conjunction with UNB alumnus Dr. Robert Quartermain, is investing a combined $125,000 at the University of New Brunswick to establish the Pretium Resources Graduate Scholarship in the department of earth sciences.

The scholarship, valued at $5,000, will be awarded annually to an outstanding earth sciences graduate student, with demonstrated interest and/or experience in field studies as well as volunteering, outreach and leadership.

This graduate scholarship complements existing funds in earth sciences previously established by alumni like Dr. Quartermain and industry leaders like Pretivm. Industry partners and UNB alumni provide $200,000 each year in support of scholarships, bursaries and field camps for earth science students at UNB.

“This support is a vote of confidence in the hands-on geological education our students receive,” said Karl Butler, UNB earth sciences chair. “UNB has long been a centre of excellence in earth sciences as well as a leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship training; our alumni have been part of countless mining discoveries in Canada and around the world over the past 50 years. Having another industry leader’s support is one more indication of the program’s strength and will help ensure our students remain on the cutting edge of innovation and achievement.”

“Pretivm is pleased to make this investment in Canada’s next generation of earth scientists,” said Jacques Perron, Pretivm president and CEO. “The mining industry is of tremendous value to Canada, contributing nearly $100 billion annually to Canada’s economy and accounting for one in every 30 jobs nationwide. It is important to us that we look to the future of this vital industry, which means investing in programs like UNB’s that train the earth scientists of tomorrow.”
