The following message was shared with the UNB community on behalf of Dr. Paul Mazerolle, UNB’s 19th President and Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Mazerolle assumed the role of UNB President on July 1, 2019.

I am honoured to begin today in the role as the 19th president and vice-chancellor of the University of New Brunswick.

Universities are amazing places for transforming the future for students, for building and translating new knowledge, and for working to engage the wider community in a series of exciting initiatives and partnerships.

I, like many people around the world, have a unique affiliation with UNB. I graduated from the university 30 years ago with a bachelor of arts degree, and it is a unique privilege to be appointed to UNB as president and vice-chancellor.

The UNB I graduated from in 1989 has several similar features today – a commitment to excellence, a comprehensive suite of programs, world-class faculty and staff, exciting sporting and extracurricular activities, among others.

However, UNB has changed over the past 30 years in exciting ways. The commitment to entrepreneurship and innovation is impressive, the growth and opportunities for Saint John are tremendous, and the emergence of new areas of research strength demonstrate how the university has evolved over these past three decades.

I wish to acknowledge the great legacy of Dr. Eddy Campbell. He has left an indelible mark on UNB through his leadership and he has recruited an excellent team of leaders who will continue to contribute to the important work ahead. I am most appreciative of and thankful for the assistance provided by Dr. Campbell through the transition.

It is an exciting time for the university as we build a new strategic plan and work to set a renewed course for UNB toward 2030. This process is well advanced, and I look forward to engaging with many stakeholders as we work to finalize the plan later in the year.

UNB is a remarkable institution with a unique history as well as a deep commitment to excellence, achievement and impact. The people, the programs, the institutional purpose, and the partnerships represent some of the key pillars for success that have enabled UNB to be a university of influence for New Brunswick, the Maritimes and Canada since 1785.

I am thrilled to have started in the role today and am optimistic for the future. I look forward to working with the entire UNB community in the months and years ahead as we continue to take UNB forward into a bright future.

Sincerely,

Paul Mazerolle
President and Vice-Chancellor
