The UNB Computer Science Co-op Program partners with more than 75 companies to provide roughly 300 student experiential learning opportunities yearly. Michelle Suk (BSCS ’22) shares how experiential learning impacted her university education and helped her to reach personal and professional goals with VeroSource Solutions Inc.
Is experiential learning an important part of a university degree?
Yes, it’s why I changed programs and transferred to UNB! I wanted real-life training to help me find work after my university studies. I wanted to explore and gain experience in various different fields within computer science, so that I am better prepared to enter the workforce. My first experiential learning opportunity came at Sonrai Security, my second placement was with UNB Health Lab and my third and final co-op placement was with VeroSource.
What attracted you to VeroSource?
It all comes down to VeroSource’s work culture and mission to give people better access to healthcare information. Our software played a huge role in providing access to test results and immunization information during the COVID-19 pandemic. I wanted to work in both tech and healthcare, so VeroSource was the perfect fit for me. When looking at the list of possible placements, I was thrilled to find that not only does this company exist, but they also had strongly agreeable vision and goal for me. VeroSource trusted me to do real work, and I truly appreciated that.
How would you describe your co-op experience at VeroSource?
VeroSource respects and treats co-op students as full-time employees. We are colleagues. Students attend key meetings and contribute to real projects. I learned much more than I expected from a placement with one company. I gained the experience of a full-stack developer.
How did your co-op placement turn into your first full-time job?
I asked! Knowing I was graduating, I asked VeroSource if I could continue as a software developer. For now, I will be working primarily on back-end functions, but I am looking forward to gaining more experience in various projects. The computer science co-op program connected me with an incredible employer, and now I am working for VeroSource as a full-time member of the team.
