It’s hard to believe that it’s already been half a decade since we decided to try something new to recognize the excellence and success of our research community. Our events and plans have evolved over that time, but the core of our activities still rests on celebrating our talented people, the incredible work that they do, and the positive impact it has on our world.

Today — perhaps more than ever — the value and importance of academic research for our province, our country, our world, and our future is a message we need to share loudly, proudly, and widely.

Fortunately, this community makes that task far easier.

I am consistently impressed by the calibre of our scholarly community — students, faculty, and staff alike — and their contributions to their field.

Research Celebration Week is one opportunity to share in celebration, to find out what our colleagues have accomplished and are doing, and to remind ourselves of the value of our work.

This year, we have another great calendar lined up for you.

From my office, we have focused our efforts on spotlighting early career researchers, Indigenous researchers, and the work of our research centres and institutes, as well as social events.

We also have more than a dozen events organized by faculties, departments, centres, and institutes, including lightning presentations about recent projects, a documentary screening, poster and creative output displays, thematic presentations, and facility tours. These events take place throughout the week and across both of our campuses, so there’s ample opportunity to take part in something that relates to your research — or that is interesting but completely unrelated!

I invite you to join us in celebrating the past year of UNB research, and the whole of our research community, including our industry, community, funding, and government partners. Take part in one or some of the many events taking place this week — they’re wonderful opportunities to meet new researchers, reconnect with colleagues, spark conversation and new ideas, and foster new collaborations.

I also invite you to carry on this recognition and celebration past the end of the week: share your successes, and your colleagues’ successes, with us and with others in your circles. Read the research stories published in UNB’s newsroom. Find out what’s happening in research at UNB — and at other universities, for that matter. If you find something interesting or exciting, share it with others in your community. Help people understand the importance and impact of academic research in their lives and in our world.
