For the past five summers, NB-IRDT has had the privilege of working with some exceptional student researchers through the Pathways to Professions experiential learning program. In 2024, we welcomed two post-secondary students as members of the AdaptNB research team: Alegria de la Parra and Caleb Moore.
The AdaptNB research stream is focused on using administrative data to increase knowledge on the impacts of climate change-related events to support climate change adaptation in New Brunswick. Under the supervision of Dr. Sandra Magalhaes, the AdaptNB team spent their summer months examining the mental health impacts of flooding on children and youth in New Brunswick.
Along with characterizing exposed populations of children and youth affected by floods, Alegria and Caleb aimed to determine the extent to which mental health is negatively affected by flooding exposure. They also explored whether certain characteristics increase vulnerability to negative mental health outcomes.
Alegria and Caleb shared their findings during a poster presentation at the Canadian Children, Youth and Communities Digital Conference hosted by the University of Toronto in October 2024. To learn more about their research, you can listen to a PowerPoint recording on their work.
