With the holiday season in full swing, students, faculty and staff at UNB are embracing the festive spirit with events and activities designed to spread cheer, foster community and celebrate cultures across our campuses. With over 10,000 students representing over 100 countries, that’s a lot of celebrating!

As with most years, the theme has been giving, gathering and gratitude with more than a few options for sweet treats sprinkled in. While long-standing traditions like faculty and staff holiday socials with the president are to be expected, smaller groups often foster camaraderie in their own special ways.

The season kicked off with the decorating of the Language Tree in the Reading Room of the Hans W. Klohn Commons in Saint John. The event invited students to share words from their native languages, celebrating the role language plays in identity, culture and belonging.

"Language is central to preserving our worldviews," said one of the event organizers, "and what better way to share our unique stories than by bringing a word that represents who we are."

In Fredericton, the month began with the Student Union and Campus Security teaming up to spread goodwill with a Holiday Giveaway in the SUB Atrium. Students were able to pick up essential items like winter hats and gloves, clothing, chargers and even jewelry, to enjoy the season in style.

The Student Affairs and Services team took to campus mid-month to offer free hot chocolate and candy canes to students as a sweet pick-me-up during the busy exam season. The team spread holiday cheer in multiple locations, helping students power through their studies with a warm beverage and a dose of festive spirit.

The African Caribbean Society ended the semester on a high note with a festive Aunty-Uncle themed potluck at Marshall d'Avray Hall, complete with games and entertainment that had attendees dancing into the holiday break.

The goodwill continued with the Holiday Spectacular UNB Chorale and Band Christmas Concert on Dec. 3. The talented group of global musicians treated the audience to the sounds of the season, bringing students, faculty and staff together for an unforgettable evening of live music.

The UNB Art Centre added a creative touch to the celebrations with their Christmas Choice Craft Sale on Dec. 8 at Memorial Hall. Shoppers enjoyed festive music, treats and the opportunity to purchase unique handmade gifts while supporting local artisans.

Perhaps most fittingly, UNB’s commitment to building a sense of belonging is captured in this year’s Holiday Video. After all, what kind of celebration is complete without a little magic at this time of year?

Whatever you’re celebrating this season, may it bring you peace, joy and connection with our UNB community and beyond.
