The Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre (MWC) is holding its annual Red Shawl Campaign from Oct. 2 to Oct. 4 in Fredericton.
The Red Shawl Campaign recognizes and honours the lost lives of Indigenous women and girls in Canada.
The red shawl is a symbol of protection and healing, representing a collective call to action to seek justice for lost sisters and their loved ones.
This year’s three-day campaign will feature an exhibit at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick and a variety of community events, including workshops, supporting exhibits and a vigil.
These activities aim to foster a deeper understanding of the issues of violence, injustice and systemic barriers that have led to the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.
The UNB community, as well as the wider Fredericton and Saint John communities, are encouraged to attend these events to honour those we have lost and seek protection for those who remain and the ones yet to be born.
Red Shawl Campaign events include:
- The supporting Red Shawl Exhibit at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery – Sept. 22 to Oct. 6
- Red Shawl Workshop – Sept. 28
- The opening of the main exhibit at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick – Oct. 2
- Walking in her Moccasins: Violence Prevention Workshop – Oct. 3
- The main exhibit at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick – Oct. 2 to 4
- Vigil – Oct. 4
