It was a banner week for the University of New Brunswick (UNB) REDS men’s hockey team, which capped an undefeated regular season with a 9-1 victory over the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Panthers on Saturday night in Fredericton.
The REDS finished the regular season with 30 wins and no losses, the first U SPORTS team with a perfect record since the Western Mustangs went 24-0 in 2002.
The team is proud of its accomplishment, but the players are already looking ahead to the playoffs and the opportunity to win a second-consecutive national championship.
"It's pretty special," said REDS' captain Jason Willms. "Obviously, there's a lot of work that goes into that and guys come to UNB not for regular season accomplishments but to win a national title and we've got a long road ahead and it's just going to get harder from here, but it's important to take it all in and, obviously, it's a pretty big accomplishment to get to this point."
