UNB and JDI announce 2023 leadership scholarship recipients

The University of New Brunswick and J.D. Irving, Limited are pleased to announce the 2023 recipients of the J.D. Irving, Limited NB Leadership Scholarship at UNB.
Valued at $10,000 per year and renewable for up to four years, the J.D. Irving, Limited NB Leadership Scholarship at UNB is among the university's most prestigious awards.
“Supporting capable young New Brunswickers with training, education and through a rewarding career here at home is at the heart of our business and our partnership with UNB,” said Jim Irving, co-CEO of J.D. Irving, Limited. “We are proud to have more than 900 UNB alumni employed with JDI and are looking forward to increasing that number by having more talented young people – like this year’s scholarship recipients – join us and grow their careers.”
The 2023 recipients are Alexandre Comeau, Sarah Hale, Isaac Jewett and Kayla McCullogh. These New Brunswick students, who will begin their UNB studies in September, were selected on the basis of their leadership ability, academic achievement and involvement in community/extra-curricular activities.
Alexandre Comeau of Miramichi is graduating from James M. Hill Memorial School and is enrolled in the bachelor of science in engineering degree program on UNB’s Fredericton campus.
“Receiving the J.D. Irving, Limited NB Leadership Scholarship at UNB means a great deal as it allows me to pursue my dream of becoming an engineer,” said Comeau. “Throughout my life I have worked really hard in many different fields from athletics, to volunteering, to my studies. I am grateful to be recognized for my efforts. With this scholarship in my back pocket, I know it will give me extra drive to succeed in my studies at UNB.”
Riverview’s Sarah Hale is graduating from Rothesay Netherwood School and will pursue a bachelor of science in engineering degree at UNB in Fredericton.
"I am honoured and grateful to be a 2023 recipient of the J.D. Irving, Limited NB Leadership Scholarship. This award means a tremendous amount to me and my family, granting me financial support, that strengthens the core of my education, experiential learning, and career advancement," she said.
Isaac Jewett of Richibucto Road attends Leo Hayes High School and is enrolled in the bachelor of business administration degree program on UNB’s Fredericton campus.
“I am truly grateful to have been selected as a recipient of the J.D. Irving, Limited NB Leadership Scholarship at UNB,” said Jewett. “As a future business student, it’s an honour to be recognized by one of the most successful businesses in New Brunswick.”
Kayla McCullogh of Rothesay attends Rothesay Netherwood School and will pursue a bachelor of business administration degree at UNB Fredericton.
"Receiving the J.D. Irving, Limited NB Leadership Scholarship has been the highlight of my year, and will help me to pursue a degree in business administration at UNB," she said.
“We are tremendously grateful to JDI for their support of our future leaders,” said UNB’s president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle. “UNB and JDI have a shared history of working to address technical and societal challenges and a shared commitment to building a better New Brunswick. These scholarships allow JDI and UNB to work together to help exceptional New Brunswickers thrive while they study and work at home in New Brunswick.”
The J.D. Irving, Limited NB Leadership Scholarship at UNB is open to high school students who are New Brunswick residents entering UNB. Preference is given to those enrolling in business, computer science, engineering or forestry degree programs. Recipients may be offered employment opportunities with JDI throughout their degree program and upon graduation.
