UNB to grant five honorary degrees during May graduation ceremonies

What do a physician, filmmaker, business leader, broadcaster and NHL hockey player all have in common? These outstanding individuals exemplify the values cherished by The University of New Brunswick’s academic community, and each will receive honorary degrees during the University’s spring graduation ceremonies in Fredericton and Saint John from May 17 to 19, 2023.

Mary Conley will receive an honorary doctorate of science in Fredericton on May 17 at 10 a.m. Dr. Conley is a retired physician, a lifelong political activist for abortion rights, an educator, and an accomplished artist. Through her tenacity, she achieved distinction in each of these areas.

Greg Hemmings will receive an honorary doctorate of letters in Saint John on May 19 at 2 p.m. He is an entrepreneur and global thought leader in positive social impact filmmaking. Hemmings is passionate about accelerating positive change in the world through film storytelling and triple-bottom-line business.

Denise LaForge will receive an honorary doctorate of science in Fredericton on May 18 at 2:30 p.m. She is a business leader and philanthropist. In 2018, LaForge was inducted into UNB’s Engineering Alumni Wall of Fame, the first female bestowed with this honour.

Dave Morell will receive an honorary doctorate of letters in Fredericton on May 18 at 10 a.m. He is a broadcaster and community advocate. Morell was the first Marketing and Events Manager for UNB Fredericton’s Athletics Dept. and became “The Voice of UNB Athletics.”

William (Willie) O’Ree will receive an honorary doctorate of letters in absentia on May 17 at 2:30 p.m. He is the first player of colour to play in the National Hockey League (NHL). O’Ree would eventually become the NHL Diversity Ambassador.
