The University of New Brunswick REDS men’s hockey team was ablaze this season, taking home the 2023 U Sports University Cup in a shutout against the University of Alberta Golden Bears on March 19.
After a scoreless first period, the REDS turned up the heat and ended the game in a 3-0 shutout. UNB head coach Gardiner MacDougall led the team to victory, the REDS’ ninth win in the tournament’s 60-year national history.
Held at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown, PEI, Cody Morgan, Cole MacKay and Austen Keating scored while REDS’ goaltender Samuel Richard made 17 saves. Richard was named University Cup MVP and U Sports Rookie of the Year.
Richard stands out this season, his first as a RED, for most wins, highest goal average, and second-best save percentage in Canadian men’s university hockey.
The UNB REDS women’s hockey team ended their season at the U Sports Women’s Hockey Championship in Montreal on March 18, where they lost 4-1 against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
REDS forward Ashley Stratton was named UNB player of the game after scoring the only goal in her final game on the team.
