Seventeen UNB researchers awarded $4.6 million in federal grant funding

The Government of Canada has announced the results of the 2022 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Discovery Research Programs competition. Among the recipients are 17 University of New Brunswick researchers, who are receiving a total of $4.6 million in research funding.
“Congratulations to this year’s NSERC Discovery Grant recipients and thank you to our federal partners for their support,” said Dr. David MaGee, UNB’s vice-president of research. “Whether improving the health of our communities and developing innovative prosthetics, supporting a transition to new sources of energy, securing our world against digital threats, or advancing any other area of inquiry, I look forward to seeing the results of these projects.”
The NSERC Discovery Research Programs encompass several grant programs offered annually for ongoing, long-term research programs. They are typically offered for a five-year period and they support research activity broadly, recognizing the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances.
The 17 UNB researchers who received funding through these programs in the cycle announced are:

- Dr. Nan Gao, mechanical engineering
- Dr. Aurora Nedelcu, biology
- Dr. Adam Dyker, chemistry
- Dr. Bruce Balcom, physics
- Dr. Kurt Samways, Canadian Rivers Institute (with Discovery Launch Supplement)

Discovery Institutes Support:
- Dr. Sanjeev Seahra, mathematics and statistics, on behalf of the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS). AARMS was awarded $1.86 million in funding.
