When diseases like SARS-CoV-2 emerge, epidemiology is key to understanding and controlling the spread of infection. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, “epidemiology” has become a common term in the public realm, appearing in news articles and interviews worldwide. But what exactly is epidemiology? And what does this field of study entail?
Epidemiology is the study of how health is distributed in populations and what factors determine good and bad health. The goals of epidemiological investigations are to control disease and improve health and wellness. Most familiar to most people these days is the need to control and to develop an understanding of COVID-19 with the goal of controlling the spread of infection and improving health outcomes in those who are infected.
In this "Concepts In..." session you will be introduced to key concepts in epidemiology, including:
- What tools are used
- How these tools are applied
- What they tell us
- Limitations and successes of the field of study
