UNB Saint John student athletes, coaches, and VIP guests gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2023-2024 season and to show what it means to be part of the Seawolves family at the 58th annual varsity banquet.
The event took place in the gym at the G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre on Friday, April 5. The night was highlighted by the schools four major awards; Male and Female Athletes of the Year and male and female recipients of the Dr. Ann Gorman Condon Academic Athletics Achievement Award.
The male Athlete of the Year was Badminton Rookie, Vaibhav Bhatta. Winning a silver medal at nationals and consistently delivering top performances throughout the season, as well as being recognized by the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as an Athlete of the week and ACAA Male Rookie of the Year, showcase his high skill and dedication to his sport.
3rd year striker, Jocephine Splitgerber, was named female Athlete of the Year. Splitgerber was named to the ACAA 1st Team All-Conference and ended 3rd in the conference for overall points with 17. Her ability to lead by example, embrace challenges and uplift those around her truly sets her apart.
The Dr. Ann Gorman Condon Academic Athletic Achievement Award recognizes one female and one male student-athlete who demonstrates excellence through strong academic achievement and who has contributed significantly to a sport on the Saint John Campus.
The male recipient for the 2023-24 season was Jack Fury-Miller, co-captain of the men’s basketball team. Fury-Miller served as a leader both on and off the court and was an active member of the Students’ Representative Council this season, all while maintaining a 3.7 GPA.
The female recipient was 2nd year from the women’s volleyball team, Emily Robichaud from Hanwell, NB. She balances all the duties associated with being a high-achieving varsity athlete, while handling the busy workload of an engineering degree.
