New year, new look for UNB Saint John’s Athletic, Recreation and Wellness Centre with major updates to the strength and conditioning room.
The motivation behind the refresh project was to better serve the needs of the entire UNB Saint John community. The university has significantly invested in facility upgrades, allotting $18,000 towards new equipment and $48,000 towards alterations and renovations. The revamped space now features updated floors with shock-absorbent material, fresh paint, new lighting, and windows in the doors to allow for more natural light.
In addition to aesthetic changes, including an increase in training space, a large amount of the equipment was replaced or refurbished. Any of the outdated machines were recycled through Fitworks, a local company dedicated to assisting others in achieving their fitness and health goals.
BEFORE
The upgraded equipment offers a variety of strength and core workouts to choose from, including a crossbox with three lifting stations, bumper plates, change plates, high-density mats, dumbbell/kettlebell racks, medicine balls, and fitness bands. Other equipment includes a new hyperextension bench, lat pulldown and low row machines. These additions provide gym-goers with more options to switch up their routines and target certain muscle groups.
AFTER
Athletics program coordinator Stephanie Guimond is optimistic about the impact of the updates on the UNB Saint John community. “We encourage our students, staff and faculty to maintain their health and strength training is a wonderful way to do that," she said.
