Kim Middleton, the Human Resources Generalist & Community Relations Advisor at Saint John LNG, said the aim is to alleviate financial pressures on student-athletes, allowing them to prioritize their education and competition.

“Saint John LNG is thrilled to be a sponsor of both the men and women’s UNBSJ basketball teams,” said Middleton. “Opportunities for youth is something we most certainly keep top of mind when considering levels of support in our community, so this partnership with the UNBSJ Seawolves is a perfect fit for us. We hope our support removes that financial burden from the student-athletes, so they can focus on what’s most important, their education and competing at this high level.”

The sponsorship, valued at $8,000, will help cover essential expenses, including student athlete gear and non-conference costs such as exhibition games and meals.

“The money we received helps the players cover their athletic fees,” says Kevin Munroe, women’s basketball coach. “The entire cost of a university education has increased significantly and not having to pay additional fees to play the game you love is a huge bonus for students.”

“In previous years, a stressful moment at the start of each season for many of our student-athletes was coming up with their athletic fee,” said Paul Vaughan, men’s basketball head coach. “With the incredible support from LNG Saint John this season, the players on our team no longer had to worry about that and instead could focus on excelling in the classroom and on the court.”

Natasha Kelly, director of athletics, says the partnership the LNG sponsorship could be a model for other varsity sports in the future.

“This partnership with Saint John LNG signifies a significant milestone for our program and we are truly appreciative of the support,” said Kelly. “I am especially thankful to have program champions such as Andrew Miller in our corner.”

“Our student-athletes impress me every day with their commitment to our teams, their studies and the community,” added Kelly. “They are incredibly deserving and we hope to forge similar community partnerships for all our varsity teams in the future.
