Evan Cartwright has officially signed with the UNB Saint John Seawolves men’s basketball team for the 2023-24 varsity season.
Cartwright comes to UNB Saint John from Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton, NB, where as captain, he led his team to the 2023 NBIAA Final 12 AAA championship game. Evan was the Leo Hayes Athlete of the Month for December 2022, as well as a KVHS Riverboat Classic all-star.
It was during the many matchups against KVHS throughout his high school career that Cartwright was first noticed by Seawolves head coach Paul Vaughan, who was then the coach of KVHS. The most recent bouts stood out to Vaughan, saying “This past season our two teams faced each other four times with Evan and his team winning the last two matchups each by one point, thanks in large part to Evan’s play during crunch time.”
Cartwright is known as a great shooter and rebounder, but it wasn’t just those attributes that intrigued Coach Vaughan. “I was also impressed with how Evan handled himself during the Final 12 Championships,” said Vaughan. “It was one of the few games when Evan’s shot wasn’t falling plus, he found himself in foul trouble most of the game. A lot of players would not handle that situation very well, but he never appeared frustrated, kept playing hard on defense, and continued to battle to the end of the game.”
That maturity and attitude should help Cartwright achieve his goals for the season, which are to “come in and hopefully make an immediate impact on the team and to earn my spot on the team. This next year I want to take my game to the next level and make a smooth transition from high school into university.”
Cartwright was drawn to the game of basketball at an early age by his cousins, Chris and Alex Robin. “They were the ones who introduced me to the game of basketball, watching them play when I was young really inspired me to be the basketball player I am today,” said Evan. “I watched my cousin Alex Robin play at Harbour Station when I was young and I knew I wanted to be there someday.”
A dedicated student, Cartwright held a 4.0 GPA each year of high school. At UNB Saint John, he will be working on a degree in business, with the hopes of pursuing a career in finance. “I chose UNBSJ because it was a great opportunity to pursue my goals academically as well as athletically. It was a great opportunity to pursue basketball at the next level, it was the right fit, I got along with the coaches and I already knew a couple of the players on the team,” said Cartwright. “Academically I was very interested in the co-op program they have for business students.”
Welcome to the Seawolves Family, Evan!
