Smith and Szemerda Named Top Seawolves for 2022-23

The University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves held their annual athlete’s awards evening Friday night, honoring their student athlete’s achievements in both academics and athletics.
The night was highlighted by the schools four major awards; Male and Female Athletes of the Year and male and female recipients of the Dr. Ann Gorman Condon Academic Athletics Achievement Award.
The Male Athlete of the Year was basketball star, Ethan Szemerda (Saint John, NB), who finished his season ranking in the top five in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association in points per game (18.8), rebounds per game (9.2), and blocks per game (0.8), while shooting 49.8% from the field and 41.7% from three-point range. The second year forward would also regularly line up defending the oppositions most dangerous scoring weapon.
5th year goalkeeper, Jillian Smith (Orono, ON), was named the Female Athlete of the Year after a stellar season in goal for the women’s soccer team. Smith was named a 1st Team ACAA All-Star Keeper after she led the ACAA in save percentage (.935) and second in goals against average (0.5), total saves (100) and shutouts (6). She was a major factor in the women’s soccer team’s trip the ACAA Championship game.
The Dr. Ann Gorman Condon Academic Athletics Achievement Award recognizes one female and one male who demonstrate excellence both academically and athletically. The male recipient for the 2022-23 season was Griffin Cassidy (Rothesay, NB) of the men’s soccer team. Cassidy led his team in goals this season with three, while being named a 1st Team ACAA All-Star. The second year forward/midfielder is a CCAA Academic All-Canadian nominee for his work on the pitch and in the classroom.
The female recipient was 2nd year middle from the women’s volleyball team, Sydney Flower (Fredericton, NB). Following a year where she was named a CCAA National Scholar, Flower followed that up with a CCAA Academic All-Canadian nomination this year as she was named a 2nd Team ACAA All-Star, helping her team make the ACAA semi-finals. She would lead her team in blocks and finish second in kills this year.
