Austin Kendall has committed to the Seawolves Men’s Volleyball program for the 2019-20 Varsity season.
Austin was born in Halifax, NS but has lived the majority of his life in Hanwell, NB. He has played both volleyball and basketball since grade six and continued on through high school. He played volleyball with the Reds club team as well as Team New Brunswick and was the captain of the 17U team.
He will be adding height and skill to the team as well as some great energy. Austin is looking forward to utilizing his team work skills when he joins the squad in the fall. He is also looking forward to a new experience in a new city.
Austin chose UNB Saint John for the Business program and the great co-op opportunity it provides. He also is looking forward to joining a great group of guys and the coaching staff of the men’s volleyball team.
“I look forward to getting to know new people and just enjoying the experience with the Seawolves”.
Dino Karatzios, Head Coach, discovered Austin at a High School tournament that the Seawolves held in 2018. He immediately took note of how well Austin’s Fredericton High school team performed at the tournament. He knew that Austin had similar values as his older brother Patrick who played four years with the Seawolves.
“Austin has strong work ethic and has great people skills. In addition, he is 6’4” and is capable of crushing a ball and his court intelligence is very good”.
Coach Karatzios thinks that Austin is a complete athlete. He is big and powerful, moves quickly and has a great vertical. Austin was exposed to University volleyball at a young age and as a result he understands the game played at this level. Austin will bring versatility to the team and become a true power hitter. His height and strength will be very beneficial in adding to the dynamics of the team.
Among Austin’s current skills, Coach Karatzios will be looking to improve his ball handling and receiving skills as well as offensive decision making skills. His primary role on the court will be to put the ball away in a consistent manner.
“Like all of our recruits, Austin is an easy going guy who likes to work hard. It’s the foundational philosophy of our team”.
Much like Coach Karatzios, Austin wants to develop all aspects of his game, from defense, to passing to hitting. Austin has the potential to become a top power hitter in the league.
