Each September, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to commemorate the tragic legacy of Residential Schools in Canada.
On Sept. 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, ceremonies will be held on both UNB campuses to honour the Survivors of Residential Schools and to remember the children who did not return home.
The Office of the Piluwitahasuwin strongly encourages the UNB community and the wider Fredericton and Saint John communities to attend these events in person as a profound gesture of respect and solidarity with Survivors and their families.
“By participating in person, we demonstrate our commitment to understanding, healing and reconciliation,” said Cheyenne Joseph, Piluwitahasuwin and associate vice-president, Indigenous engagement at UNB.
“These events provide a unique opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on this critical chapter in history. This reflection not only deepens our understanding of the past, but also challenges us to consider our role in the ongoing journey of reconciliation.”

The gathering will begin with a live rendition of the Wolastoq and Mi'kmaq honour songs from community members. Elders will be present on both campuses to provide a blessing and smudge.
Attendees will also hear firsthand stories and reflections from Wolastoqey and Mi’kmaq Elders and Residential School Survivors. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange shirts and to write their reflections on orange hearts. There will be an opportunity to place hearts on the sweat lodge frame at the event.
"There is incredible power in listening to stories directly from Survivors,” said Todd Ross, senior Indigenous advisor at UNB.
“Each year on our campuses we have the opportunity to step up and be part of reconciliation efforts by bearing witness to these incredible journeys of strength."
The gathering will end with a moment of silence to remember all those impacted by Residential Schools.
While there will be virtual access to the event via livestream, Joseph says physical presence holds a deep significance for the honoured guests and Survivors.
“Your physical presence is a way to show respect for the Community and the meaning of this day.”
