In North America, a bike is stolen every 30 seconds. Less than five per cent of bikes are returned and less than one per cent of stolen bikes are reported. In an attempt to change those statistics, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Fredericton and the Fredericton Police Force are teaming up with 529 Garage, a comprehensive bike registry and recovery program that aims to reduce bicycle theft, promote cycling and make cities and campuses more bike friendly.

“Working with the Fredericton Police Force on this initiative is a win-win for the UNB community and the city of Fredericton as a whole,” said Don Allen UNB director of security and traffic in Fredericton. “This collaboration will not only help prevent and reduce bike thefts; it will also educate people on how to better protect their bikes and ensure that more bikes are returned to their rightful owners whether on campus or off.”

Fredericton cyclists can register their bikes on 529 Garage or mobile app (available on the Google Play and App Store), including a photo and serial number, to prevent theft. If a bike is stolen, a 529 Garage user can send out an alert that notifies the 529 Garage network. Cyclists can also get a 529 shield to work as a visual deterrent to thieves.

“The Fredericton Police Force is thrilled for the opportunity to deter bicycle theft and easily identify rightful ownership and return property of recovered bicycles,” said Cst. Michael Bamford. “We want residents to enjoy the city’s trails network to its fullest extent knowing protection of their property is our priority.”

529 Garage simplifies the bike registration process so cyclists can enjoy their rides worry-free knowing their property is protected. Cities and campuses using 529 Garage have seen a double-digit reduction in bike theft.
