Students on both of UNB’s campuses are working to take action against rising food insecurity.
Both the UNB Student Union (UNBSU) on the Fredericton campus and the UNB Students’ Representative Council (SRC) on the Saint John campus have established food banks to ensure no students go hungry, and they are gratefully accepting financial support from UNB alumni, faculty, staff and friends on the inaugural UNB Giving Day, February 29th, 2024.
Teams of student volunteers are hard at work each week staffing the UNBSU Food Bank in Fredericton and the SRC Campus Food Pantry in Saint John. The volunteers are generous with their time and labour, and hope the community matches that generosity by helping to fill the shelves with food.
Food insecurity is at an all-time high among Canadian students, with unprecedented numbers seeking help from food banks.
UNBSU President Amanda Smith emphasized the mental and physical health implications of food insecurity for students. “When we’re well nourished, it’s preventative health care,” she said. “It’s important students know they’re not alone and that it’s OK to ask for help.”
“We’re working to actively help students who can’t bridge the gap at the end of the month or the end of the week,” said UNB SRC President and CEO, Madison Worth. “To this end, we are thrilled to partner with UNB and UNB Associated Alumni for our university’s inaugural Giving Day.”
