Title of Presentation:  Processes of Coping and Communication between Parents and Athletes in Youth Sport

In this presentation, Dr. Tamminen will provide an overview of her research in the area of youth sport. She will present research on parent socialization of coping among youth athletes, parental communication in sport, and current research examining patterns of parent-athlete communication in sport.

Dr. Katherine Tamminen is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education at the University of Toronto. Her research program in sport psychology focuses on youth sport and the social processes influencing athletes’ stress, coping, and emotion regulation. Her research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and she has published over 85 articles and chapters on the topics of stress, coping, emotion, and youth sport. Dr. Tamminen is currently the President of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology (SCAPPS), and she also serves as an Associate Editor and as a member of the Editorial Boards for several journals in the field, including International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology and Psychology of Sport and Exercise. She is also a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
