Toxics at Home and in the Workplace: Controlling Exposure

Year over year, an average of two workers die each day from diseases rooted in occupational exposure.

In this edition of UNB's series of Let's Talk Safety webinars, Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and host, Glyn Jones, will share his expertise on the topic of hazardous chemicals and provide strategies that can be implemented to make our homes and workplaces incident- and disease-free. Topics Glyn will discuss include:

  • Common industrial and home-based substances that may cause disease;
  • The legislative framework related to worker exposure assessment and control;
  • Methods to most easily identify chemicals, read workplace labels, and determine the content of wastes in the workplace;
  • The Hierarchy of Controls and the importance of engineering controls, like ventilation systems, enclosures, and process modifications to minimize chemical exposure;
  • The best methods of conducting risk assessments for chemical exposure;
  • Methods for evaluating the severity and likelihood of exposure;
  • The importance of continuous training for workers regarding chemical hazards and safe work practices;
  • The most effective communication channels for reporting chemical hazards and incidents;
  • The importance of health monitoring programs for workers exposed to certain chemicals; and
  • Types of medical surveillance and periodic health assessments.
