UNB Art Centre

This summer enjoy a visit to the UNB Art Centre to view the exhibit Into the Blue: Remembering Brigid Toole Grant, a tribute to the beloved artist, activist and humanitarian who passed away last year. The exhibit is on display in both galleries until Aug. 30.

Into the Blue: Remembering Brigid Toole Grant is a labour of love by her daughter Hannah Grant, who along with curator Roslyn Rosenfeld, assembled a collection of acrylics, watercolours, prints and drawings from friends, family and the UNB Permanent Collection. It tells the story of a talented and insightful artist, who found inspiration in the people and the land she called home.

Gerard Collins, The Fall of Icarus (2018)

Acrylic on canvas
122 x 81 cm

Gerard Collins is known for his painterly approach to still-life, landscape and interiors. While keenly observed, his paintings are not delicate depictions of polite subjects. Rather, they are drawn from everyday life, luscious and expressive with vivid colour and thickly painted lines. The energy he brings to his painting is translated in this strong composition of this commonplace scene of cats at play.

Gerard Collins completed his foundation year at the St. Martin’s School of Art in London, England and then earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at NSCAD in Halifax in 1981. In 1980, as part of a residency program, Collins studied with the famous German painter Gerhard Richter at the Dusseldorf Staatliche Kunstakademie. Collins has exhibited extensively throughout the region as well as Ottawa and Toronto since 1981. He has received grants from the Canada Council and ArtsNB and has been the recipient of the Strathbutler Award (2001) and the Miller Brittain Award for Excellence in Visual Art (2005). In 2023, Robert Barriault and Mary Blatherwick published a monograph entitled Gerard Collins: Fifty Years of Painting published by Gooselane Editions, Canada’s oldest independent publisher. This artist’s work can be found in many public institutions across the Maritimes, as well as the National Gallery of Canada, the Canada Council Art Bank and the New Brunswick Art Bank. Gerard Collins lives and works in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The UNB Art Centre (506-453-4623) is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and during special events. Admission is free to members of the public.
